Harvard Negotiation & Mediation Clinical Program (HNMCP) partners with Justice Call for an innovative project on grassroots peacebuilding efforts.
Justice Call is excited to announce a groundbreaking project in partnership with Harvard Negotiation & Mediation Clinical Program (HNMCP) at Harvard Law School, an independent youth-led organization in the MENA region. The project, titled “Mapping Grassroots Peace Negotiations Led by Civil Society and Youth in Conflict-Affected Countries,” seeks to explore and analyze peacebuilding efforts at the local level, often overlooked in traditional peace studies.
About the Project: While state-level (Track 1) peace negotiations are widely studied and documented, local grassroots (Track 3) negotiations, often led by civil society and youth groups, remain under-explored. Justice Call and the HNMCP’s Dispute Systems Design Clinic aim to fill this gap by mapping and analyzing key examples of Track 3 peace efforts in conflict-affected regions, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and beyond.
By adopting a Systems Design Approach, the project will identify trends, patterns, and unique models from these grassroots negotiations. The outcomes will generate valuable recommendations to inform future peace negotiations at both the local (Track 3) and state (Track 1) levels, fostering stronger connections between community-led and national peace processes.
Project Goals:
- Mapping Key Examples of local peace negotiations led by civil society and youth in conflict-affected countries, with a focus on the MENA region and beyond.
- Utilizing a Systems Design Approach to identify models, commonalities, differences, and patterns among grassroots negotiations.
- Developing Recommendations and lessons learned to inform future peace efforts, from grassroots Track 3 negotiations to higher-level Track 1 processes.
